I don’t know about you, but I feel that this year went by waaaaay too fast! Where did the time go?! But with the beginning of a new year comes looking back and reflecting about how that year went by, what you learned from it, and what you hope to achieve in the new year.
We all know the typical new year’s resolutions…lose weight, eat healthy, drink more water, have me time, etc. etc. These are great goals, yet sadly all too often by the end of January we are often back to our old tried-and-true habits that we were trying to break away from. Habits are good! They provide consistency, routine, and even comfort. So with that said you might ask “well then how do I make changes if I keep the same habits?!” Good question! It’s all about gradual changes! So you want to lose weight and eat healthy but love to spend evenings on the couch snacking on chips? Ok…maybe substitute the chips with carrots and some Ranch dressing for dipping, or some sliced fruit. If you have a treadmill or stationary bike, or even just peddles (just place them in front of your chair and peddle!) get on that while watching your favorite show. Weather nice outside, go for a walk around your house or neighborhood. You don’t need to hit the gym on Jan. 1st! You don’t need to go to the gym…period! Look up videos on YouTube or exercises on Pinterest and avoid that monthly costly membership.
So what does the beginning of a new year mean to me? As the title says “New Year New Beginnings.” I have much of the same resolutions that I listed above (lose weight, eat healthy, exercise more, etc.), but I will be reframing how I see them, not so much as resolutions, but as goals that I hope to have accomplished and mastered by the end of the upcoming year. I know it seems crazy to be thinking of the end of 2016 before it even started, but it’s all about where do you see yourself at that time and what steps you need to take to get to that point.
So what are my goals for 2016 (they are not in any specific order):
- Eating Healthy & exercising (and losing weight will come eventually) – I no longer see eating well and exercising as means to only reach a certain weight on the scale. It’s about finding out what is good for your body (physically and mentally) and feelings well. If it’s only for reaching a certain weight, most likely than not, all that weight can easily come back once we reach our target weight and go back to eating again! Eat healthy, eat clean, get in some exercise here and there and the weight will fall off eventually.
- Grow Professionally – I am so excited that this upcoming new year will mean becoming licensed graduate therapist! I am so excited that I’ll finally be working in the profession that I have been in school for (what seems like) forever! I hope to be able to start and continue to grow in that field by always going above what I’m just required to do (i.e. attend professional development meetings, take classes and become certified in specific areas, become involved in advocacy, etc.). The year 2016 will certainly mark a brand new chapter in my life and I couldn’t be happier.
- Religiously/Spiritually – All too often we can get so caught up in our lives that we don’t have the time, or even forget, to take time to strengthen our religion or spirituality. My goal for 2016 is to be more mindful and thankful of all that I have been given and to give back as much as I can. I want to get to where my internal clock is attuned to the times of prayer and it becomes second-nature to do it on time, and read and understand my religion better. We can all do with bettering ourselves religiously or spiritually to achieve that inner peace that a lot of us strive for, which will in turn help us better our daily lives.
- Blogging – So this was an interesting venture for me this year and it started good, but sort of fell of the wagon with this one LOL! So my goal for this area is to be more active and post something…ANYTHING…a week. It could be a post I prepared in advance for, or a post that I just opened a new blog post page and started typing. I’ve been asked what I want my blog to be for and honestly I still don’t really know. A bit of everything I guess! A bit of my life, a little about planning & organizing, recipes I tried and want to share, favorite things, subscription open boxes and reviews…the list can go on! But the point is to be consistent and that is what I am striving for…consistency in posting. So why am I doing this blog? My main reason is as a creative outlet. Becoming a full-time therapist can often take a big toll, and I remember almost every single professor stressing how important is it to take time out for activities and things to get your mind off work to prevent burn-out. Blogging is that creative outlet for me in that I can talk about things that don’t normally come up on a day-to-day interaction with others and has nothing to do with what I do professionally. I want it to be a fun creative outlet, and hopefully readers (you guys 🙂 ) would enjoy it and find it fun too!
I am so looking forward to 2016 all that it has in store for me and hoping that I can get to share some of it with you guys!
Have a happy and a safe New Year and all the best wishes for a prosperous 2016!!!!!
